Places to Ice Skate in Canada

Two Jack Lake in Alberta, Canada

By Mikaela of Voyageur Tripper

There are few things as Canadian as skating on a naturally frozen lake, surrounded by mountains on all sides. Banff National Park in the winter offers dozens of such lakes to go skating on and one of the best is Two Jack Lake.

Two Jack Lake is a short 15-minute drive from Banff Town Centre. Unlike at other destinations around Banff Town Centre or Lake Louise, Two Jack Lake is not a formal skating rink. There are no skate rentals here or zambonis. Locals scrape the snow away so it is large enough for skating and hockey. But since it’s not a formal skating rink, there often aren’t many people here and it feels much more like a winter wonderland than a tourist attraction. Though be careful on the ice and don’t walk where there aren’t already footprints or cleared snow – you don’t want to go for an accidental swim.

Skating in Banff is one of the best things to do for a winter visit to Banff. Ice skating on Two Jack Lake is one of the best places to go ice skating in Canada and it belongs on any winter bucket list.

To go skating at Two Jack Lake, follow Minnewanka Scenic Drive until you see signs for Two Jack Lake. There is parking right by the lake. Once parked, grab your skates and walk down the hill. You’ll need to walk over some snow to get to the rink. It gets chilly, so bring warm socks and hot chocolate in a thermos.

Canada is a paradise for ice skating during the wintertime but one of the best to go is on Lake Louise in Banff National Park.  What makes ice skating at Lake Louise so unique is the breathtaking scenery around you. Sudbury’s Kivi Park in Ontario, Canada

By Lindsay of I’ve Been Bit!

It’s no secret that Northern Ontario is a winter wonderland. It’s a great spot to get outside once the snow falls! One of these must-visit Ontario winter destinations is the city of Sudbury where you’ll find Kivi Park. This all-season park spans 450 acres and inside you’ll find Nina’s Skateway, a 1.3 kilometre long skating trail that’s absolutely magical. Lace up your skates and hit the trail as you weave through a beautiful forest of birch trees that seem to sparkle in the sunlight. Currently it can only be enjoyed during the day, however it is said that there are plans to illuminate which would make Kivi Park a perfect winter date night destination. Nina’s Way might be one of the newer skating trails in Ontario as it only opened in 2019 but it’s been a hit since day one!

Arrowhead Ice Skating Trail, Ontario, Canada

By Brianna of Curious Travel Bug

Arrowhead Provincial Park has one of the best ice skating trails in the province and is the perfect winter activity. This 1.3 km long figure-8 ice trail is best known for its fire and ice nights where they light up the trail with tiki torches.

Set among a forest of birch and pine trees, it’s best to get here just at the beginning of night skating before it gets too busy. It’s a very special feeling to skate through the snowy forest during twilight while the snow is falling. Ice skating in Arrowhead is definitely a winter-wonderland type of experience. If you would rather avoid the crowds and have the ice skating trail to yourself, during the daytime it is not very busy, even on weekends. The trail itself is well maintained and there are some sections where a slight hill will let you pick up speed on the way down.

Located just outside Huntsville, the ice trail is about a 2-hour drive from Toronto and is best combined with spending a day hiking, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing in the park. There are skate rentals available here although they can run out of popular sizes. As it is a provincial park, there is an entrance fee to the park that is around $20.

Forest Skating Trail at Domaine Enchanteur, Quebec, Canada

By Brianna of Curious Travel Bug

This spectacular 15 km ice skating trail is located outside of Trois-Rivieres and can be done as a day trip from Montreal. The ice skating trail here is more than just a simple loop, it is an ice trail that winds its way through a forest with multiple branches that zig-zag through the trees. You can easily spend a couple of hours exploring the trails without repeating any. It’s also large enough that if you go early before the crowds, you can get the trails to yourself. It really feels like a magical experience to silently glide over the ice through this forest. The web of ice trails really gives you the feeling that you are exploring a forest rather than just skating.

The trail is well maintained and at the halfway point there is a warming station where you can go inside and grab a hot drink and snack. There are also some animals to view on your route as in the summer there is a petting zoo. Alpacas, emus, and other animals add to the charm of the skating trail. Keep an eye out and you may spot one of the many bears that have been carefully carved out of tree stumps that make the ice trail.

This trail is popular so make sure to go early in the day before tourist buses arrive. It’s best to visit in January until mid-February when the ice is best and hasn’t had any warm ice melting days.

Places to Ice Skate in the United States

Rink at Rockefeller Center, New York City, USA

By Sally of Our3kidsvtheworld

The ice skating rink located outside the Rockefeller Building in New York City has to be one of the most famous ice skating rinks in the world. Used in many American movies, who can forget Home Alone 2 – Lost in New York when Kevin meets his mum at the end of the movie right in front of the giant Christmas tree and ice skating rink. Another famous film is Autumn in New York which has Richard Gere and Winona Ryder as Will and Charlotte skating on the famous rink.

Maggie Daley Ice Ribbon, Chicago, USA

By Valentina of Valentina’s Destinations

Chicago is known as the ‘windy city.’ Even though the term windy refers to politics, locals know that Chicago weather can be windy, cold, and unpredictable.

Reliably cold weather in the winter is good for one thing — and that’s ice skating! Chicago has a few wonderful ice skating locations around the city. Although, the most famous are at Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park.

The Millennium Park Ice Ribbon is more touristy. You’ll likely have to wait in a long line. It’s a traditional oval ice rink. You only need to walk 10 minutes to get to Maggie Daley Park from Millennium Park!

Maggie Daley Ice Ribbon in Chicago with the ice trail and skyline in the background. This skating trail in Chicago is a lot more fun than your typical round rink to skate.

Maggie Daley Park has been renovated in recent years, and it’s where you’ll find all the locals. The best part is that skating is completely free! You only pay if you need rentals. This isn’t the same for many of the other tourist attractions in Chicago, so it’s an exciting opportunity.

The Maggie Daley Ice Ribbon is also fun because it’s not the traditional round ice rink. It’s a track that loops around in one direction, so you’ll get a different view of the city as you follow its course.

Skating Union Square in San Francisco, USA

By Emma from Journey of a Nomadic Family

Pack some warm clothes and let me transport you to San Francisco; home to the infamous Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Pier 39 & its resident seal population.

San Fran might not be the obvious choice for a unique skating experience, the temperatures hardly plummet and the average winter temperature is frequently the average summer temperature for Scotland!

However, skating in San Francisco is special because there are not just one or two skating rinks, there’s a whopping thirteen ice rinks in the Bay area in total.

The two rinks within the actual city of San Francisco though are found in Civic Square (this is a big & busy one) near the Asian Art Gallery and an intimate and sparkly rink that sits at the back of Macy’s in Union Square.

Colorful lights on the Union Square skating rink in San Francisco, USA with Macy's lit up behind it with holiday wreaths in every window. San Francisco is a great city to skate in with multiple skating rinks and lots of Christmas lights.

At Union Square, you’ll be surrounded by a towering Christmas tree, decorated buildings, sparkling lights and the smell of wintery foods wafting over you. The size of this rink makes it perfect for beginners and families with small kids.

You can book a ticket online or just turn up at this holiday ice rink. The hiring of skates is available as is the hire of those delightful Penguins that help you balance & perfect your technique. The ice rink opens around November 6th and is open until after New Year. Ice rink hours are from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., daily. Tickets range from $13-18, lockers are $3 and the penguin is $6.

Other winter activities to do in this fab city are the California Academy of Sciences & the Japanese Tea Garden, The Exploratorium on Piers 15 & 17, Baker Beach & Lands End Labyrinth, The Painted Ladies House & Alamo Square Park, Battery Spencer for views across the Bay & the bridge, whale watching tours that leave from Fisherman’s Wharf and of course, the legendary NYE Firework’s display.

If you’re looking for a secret spot filled with boutique-style cafes, restaurants and shops, head to Patricia’s Green In Hayes Valley. It’s a foodies delight and keep an eye out here for some of San Fran’s famous murals.

Blue Cross RiverRink in Philadelphia, USA

By Derek and Mike of Robe Trotting

Philadelphia is among America’s great cities. The destination is incredible throughout the year, but Philadelphia is the perfect winter travel destination.

One of the most beloved activities to do during winter in Philadelphia is go ice skating at the Blue Cross RiverRink. It’s located on Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront, an area of the city that has been redeveloped in the last decade. The redevelopment has focused on attractions to bring visitors to the area with a summer boardwalk and ferris wheel and a pop-up street food park and beer garden.

The winter season isn’t let out though, and when the temperatures drop in Philadelphia the Winterfest at Penn’s Landing is the place to be. It includes an Olympic-sized ice skating rink with sweeping views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the river. Admission is $4 and skates can be rented for $10. The must-visit attraction opens in late-November and is open through the month of March.

Around the outdoor rink you’ll find a ski-chalet style lodge with cabins, outdoor seating with pillows, blankets and firepits and refreshments. It’s perfect for warming up after a few laps on the rink and making a full day experience. The season includes daily entertainment and there’s even a kid’s lodge with off-the-ice activities for children.

All of these features add to the fun and make Philadelphia’s Blue Cross RiverRink one of the best ice skating destinations in the world.

Madeline Island Ice Road, Wisconsin, USA

By Paulina of Paulina on the Road

The Ice Road, popularly known as Madeline Island’s Ice Road is located in Wisconsin, USA, on Lake Superior. The road links the city of Bayfield, on the mainland with La Pointe. The road is about 3km long and it is used in the replacement of summer ferry service for several weeks in a year.

Visiting Bayfield, Wisconsin is full of adventures no matter when a person visits. Be it summers or winters, there are several fun activities that travelers can enjoy. Along with staying in luxury cabins in Wisconsin, travelers can also experience several cold-weather adventures like exploring the Ice Road and ice skating on it.

Traveling the Madeline Island Ice Road is a unique experience for the travelers as it is fun to skate around La Pointe and see everything covered in snow. Not only skating, but the burgers named after the Apostle Islands are also a must-try food.

It is best to visit during the winters as the water body gets completely frozen into a solid area becoming a great place to drive, walk, and especially skating. There are 2 miles of ice that is perfect for ice skating. The road is sometimes too thin for vehicles or too thick for ferry service, but it is suitable for ice skating when the road is solid.

It will be useful for travelers to rent an Iced Sled water taxi that travels to and from the Mainland when the road is thick enough.

Vienna Christmas Dream, Austria

By Nadine of Le Long Weekend

Every year, the area in front of the Vienna City Hall at Rathausplatz is transformed into a scene straight from a festive fairytale. As one of the biggest and most famous Christmas markets in Vienna, the Viennese Christmas Dream lures in visitors with its colourful huts, jovial atmosphere and advent attractions.

There’s one more reason both locals and visitors alike flock to this market, and that’s the ice skating rink that pops up from mid-November to early January to accompany the Christkindlmarkt. It’s an absolutely magical experience skating to a backdrop of decorated trees and fairy lights, but if you can’t make it during the Christmas period, the rink reappears, larger than before, at the end of January, and lasts right through to the beginning of March.

The rink is open all day, right through to 10pm, and you can hire skates – making it perfect for those just passing through the city. Entrance costs around €8, but children and beginners can skate in a designated area for free before 4pm, when the rink reincarnates in January. Make a day of it by visiting the Xmas markets, shopping for trinkets and treats, grabbing a bite to eat (such as the hearty ‘soup in bread’) and a warming mug of punch and then hitting the rink once the sun starts to sink.

London Natural History Museum, UK

By Jamie of Travel Addict

There are several beautiful ice rinks that pop up around Christmas time around London’s famous landmarks. Skating within the shadow of such a beautiful landmark makes the experience unique and magical. The opportunity to be up close and personal with the Natural History Museum, and have its gorgeous architecture as the background for this experience is a must-visit if you’re in London in November or December.

The Natural History Museum has a large outdoor rink set up with the backdrop of the Museum, a Christmas Tree and a charming carousel to frame the scene. The experience is well organized with ticketed times to join, a zamboni to clean the ice between sessions, and plenty of helpful penguins for children (and some adults). It even has a separate small rink for children to learn without having adults wizz past.

The ticket prices for the venues in London vary greatly, but the Natural History Museum is one of the most reasonable priced, and includes the cost of skate rentals. There is a cloak room available as well.

After you’ve finished skating you can head to the upstairs cafe and bar, which overlooks the skating rink with a charming balcony to watch the skaters glide past. Try the mulled wine or mulled cider for a proper winter treat.

The best time to visit is in late October or early November, avoiding the Christmas rush, and earlier in the day will guarantee less skaters and some more room to take a spin on the rink.

Somerset House, London, UK

By Caroline of CK Travels

The large Neoclassical building Somerset House is one of the prettiest places to ice skate in London at Christmas. Located on the Strand near the river Thames, this arts hub regularly hosts events and exhibitions, and every year for the past 20 years they’ve opened up a 900-square-metre ice skating rink in their eighteenth-century outdoor courtyard.

Complete with a huge 40 foot Christmas tree, alpine-inspired restaurant called Fortnum’s Lodge and gift shop, Somerset house is a great spot to hang out in the run up to Christmas. In the evenings, the rink is lit up beautifully with colourful spot lights, whilst DJs spin everything from hip hop to electronic music to create an open-air party destination for music lovers. If you don’t fancy a skate you can watch the skaters from the Fortnum’s Lodge and enjoy winter delights such as raclette, cheese or chocolate fondue, smoked salmon, mince pies als well as champagne and mulled wine.

The rink is open from around mid November to mid January and tickets start at £11 for adults which includes skate hire. Sessions sell out quickly so you must book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment (a small number of tickets are available on-site each day). You can also book ice skating lessons on their website.

Rijksmuseum Ice*Amsterdam Skating, Amsterdam

By Frankie of As The Bird Flies

While temporary during winter months, the ice-skating rink set up outside Rijksmuseum (the National Museum) on Museumplein (Museum Square) is easily the city’s most picturesque skating rink. Not only is it located in the centre of the city, close to famous museums and landmarks like the Van Gogh Museum and Concert Gebouw, but this ice-skating rink is also beautifully lit up after dark and a typical Amsterdam bridge is set up over the rink so spectators can stand and watch those skating below.

It’s not a rink for racing or even going very far or very fast – it’s quite small! – but it is a great ice-skating rink for beginners and for those who want to do something festive and fun if visiting Amsterdam at Christmas or in winter.

Ice skating outside of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This is one of the best skating rinks in the city and is part of the Ice*Amsterdam festival that is held there in the winter.

You definitely have to book your date and time slot in advance but because the rink is so close to Amsterdam’s most famous museums, the canals and other sights, it’s really easy to get to by foot or public transport and you can easily make it a fun part of your day.

Skates are available to hire and chairs are provided for beginners to lean on and push around if they’re not feeling confident enough. There’s normally a bar also set up next to the rink so you can have a hot chocolate or a mulled wine after you’ve done your skating and extend that cosy feeling of being in a mini winter wonderland in the middle of Amsterdam!
