Montreal Vegetarian and Vegan Food Guide
Montreal is an amazing foodie destination for vegetarians and vegans. The French influence on food is everywhere here along with a Canadian twist on it. Even though some of these places only serve vegetarian or vegan food, it was phenomenal and would appeal to most. One of the reasons I was excited about visiting Montreal was to try out some of the food on offer, and the city did not disappoint.
I visited over a long weekend and was able to visit all of these places on my 3 day trip to Montreal. I have to say that Montreal is definitely one of my favourite foodie destinations and I’m looking forward to returning and trying out more places that I couldn’t fit in on this trip.
If you’ve visited Montreal and have a great restaurant recommendation, leave me a comment, I would love to hear it!

Where to Eat Vegetarian and Vegan in Montreal
Sushi Momo
This vegan sushi restaurant serves up amazing sushi. They have so many sushi rolls on the menu with plenty of flavours happening. I ended up getting one of the set omakase meals and loved the variety of rolls I had here. The list of rolls is huge and a bit overwhelming but if you are ordering individual rolls, the surf and turf roll was my favourite. A surprising favourite was the beet tartare they serve as an appetizer. It was seriously delicious.
Even if you do eat fish, it’s worth trying out this vegan alternative. Make sure you make a reservation here as it is very popular and it does fill up. If you can only eat at one restaurant on this list, make it Sushi Momo. The atmosphere here is really cozy and welcoming.
Pizza 900
Pizza 900 is a local chain restaurant with restaurants across Quebec. If you’re craving a really good pizza in Montreal, this place is a great candidate. Really cozy restaurant with great vibes right in downtown Montreal. They serve up pizza made in a wood-fired oven and have an amazing pizza sauce and crust.
La Banquise
This is the classic poutine place. I hit up La Banquise looking to try traditional poutine. I was not disappointed. This casual eatery gets very busy at meal times as it’s said to be one of the best poutines in the city. They have lots of types of poutine on the menu, including a vegan one. The serving sizes are very generous here so come hungry! It’s also open 24 hours so you can hit it up for a late-night meal.
Aux Vivres
This is the original vegan restaurant in Montreal. With several locations, Aux Vivres serves up Canadian style vegan food. I ordered a mezze and chapati plate that had several dips on it that was delicious. The standout winner for food here was the faux salmon spread and tzatziki that was addictively good.
Best Dessert Places in Montreal
Juliette & Chocolat
I didn’t have plans to visit Juliette & Chocolat but walking by this dessert restaurant it looked so cute and inviting I just had to try it out. True to its name, the menu is absolutely full of chocolate desserts and hot chocolate. They have a vegan brownie on the menu but most desserts are not vegan friendly here. The serving sizes are huge here so definitely go hungry.
Juliette & Chocolat is a chain restaurant in Quebec that I am hoping finds its way to Toronto. I loved it so much I visited twice and I can definitely recommend this as the perfect place to have a hot chocolate or dessert. They do also do brunch foods like waffles and omelettes. They also sell hot cocoa powder and other Juliette & Chocolat specialities here that you can take home with you.
Patisserie Kouign Amman
I’m still dreaming of this place. Located on the Plateau, Patisserie Kouign Amman is basically the perfect French bakery. Everything I tried here was excellent. If you only hit up one bakery in the city, I’m voting for this one. It’s got amazing croissants and the kouign amman are delicious buttery pastries that should not be missed as it is unlike any other pastry I’ve had. Another great pick is one of the tarts they sell. I had a blueberry tarte here and it was delicious.
Cafe Osmo
Set in a unique building that looks futuristic and space-like, Cafe Osmo is a great place to grab a coffee in the morning. They also serve delicious danishes and other pastries. This is a very convenient location for coffee and breakfast if you are staying at Hotel 10, which was the perfect place to stay to explore all these restaurants.
Tire d’Érable
While not a specific restaurant, this is a food you should try if you visit during maple syrup season, which is late winter (February-March). Montreal often has festivals, including in the winter. When I visited they had a winter lights festival and had booths set up selling tire d’érable. It’s a traditional Quebec candy made of boiled maple syrup that is then poured over snow. It forms a soft maple candy that is served on a stick. It’s vegan and it’s delicious.
Maison Christian Faure
Update: This has permanently closed
I happened upon Maison Christian Faure after a visit to Montreal’s Port. There is a rather elegant tea room you can dine in if you have the time, or you can grab some dessert to go. They serve Kusmi tea here and will bring you a platter of desserts to choose from. There are no wrong choices here but the mango mousse cake and the chocolate cake are both phenomenal. The atmosphere here is perfect for taking a break from exploring Montreal.
Vegetarian Food Experience in Montreal
Overall, I felt like Montreal was a super vegetarian and vegan friendly city. There are lots of vegan restaurants to choose from and you can even try specialities like poutine. I loved that there is such a thriving food scene in Montreal. It’s definitely a fantastic destination for any vegan foodie looking for a city weekend break in Quebec.
